Inside the mind of a B2B Fintech CTO

Mattias Oscarsson, CTO, Quiddly

So, the time has come to settle down in some comfy wingchairs, like Neo and Morpheus in the Matrix, to discuss what the nature of reality is for a CTO. Do they see life in code? Is every choice the result of a logical chain reaction, traceable back to one single line of code, and can everything we see around us be viewed as functions?

This is a four-part article series spanning everything from architecture, challenges, risks, AI and innovation. In this first part we get to know what life events led Mattias to becoming a CTO and his unique blend of tech, philosophy and psychology. We also learn what the most interesting aspects of working with B2B fintech are right now and of course the struggles and challenges.

Building something real and levelling up

Before diving into the nitty gritty tech details, we are curious what Mattias thinks is the most interesting and rewarding thing about working at Quiddly. He sums it up with “The journey and winning together”.

He expands that it is the people, the pace, and the sense that we are building something real, not just talking about it. There has never been a dull moment. The startup phase was intense and there were times when things simply had to get done and there was no one else to do them. But that is also what makes it rewarding.

One of my proudest moments was when the organization had grown to the point where operations could run smoothly without me. That was the signal we had built something sustainable, a real team, not just a collection of contributors. Handing over the engineering department to our VP of Engineering felt less like stepping back and more like levelling up as a company.

Blending technology with psychology and philosophy

His professional experience is diverse, but for the last decade he has focused on IT. He has a Master of Science and Engineering degree in Industrial Engineering from LTH and has continued to expand his knowledge in computer science and many other fields ever since. However, his passion for tech started, as for many millennials, by looking at the blinking command prompt cursor in MS DOS on the family home computer.

I have always been curious about how things work. My interest in computers started with my very first encounter with the MS DOS command prompt. And like many millennials, my interest was driven further by the challenge of making games run on whatever hardware we had available.

Mattias has several interests outside of work, but psychology and philosophy are two that strongly influence how he thinks as a CTO. Keeping a human perspective is very important to him, both in terms of creating real value for others and in building technology that genuinely serves people.

Understanding how people think and behave is essential when designing systems and processes. It helps ensure solutions are user friendly, supports smarter decision making, and reduces the risk of costly mistakes.

Want to know what it takes to build disruptive B2B fintech

In the second part of the article series we make a technical and strategic deep dive into what it takes to build disruptive fintech solutions for a broad spectrum covering credits, debt collection and invoicing.
